Bricklaying (Day 5)

Day 5 was quite a fascinating day. Our team was delegated the task of building several half brick walls. Under the guidance of a professional bricklayer, we successfully managed to erect 3 sturdy walls which stood a total of 6 brick courses. The team got the privilege of mixing our own mortar. We used 2 wheel barrows full of sand, 1 bag of cement (50Kg) and water. Spades were used to mix the aggregates until it became the right consistency. Trowels were used to apply the mortar onto the bricks. A stretcher bond was used during the construction of these walls, so several bricks needed to be broken in half in order to have half bricks. The placement of each brick was very important because they needed to be properly aligned, ensuring that the wall remained straight. For this, a Spirit level was used in order to ensure that the bricks remained level. This was quite an authentic experience and judging from the levels of excitement displayed by my team mates, I can confidently say that this was one of the best tasks we took on throughout the week.
